About Our STEM Magnet Program
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Magnet program at West Florence High School is an Honors/Advanced Placement level magnet program that accelerates and enriches learning experiences for students who are academically gifted and have an interest in STEM related majors and careers. Our STEM Magnet Program creates learning experiences which enable students to pursue AP courses, research, and/or internships in a field of interest. We will offer experiences that create integration of studies across the curriculum. After successfully completing the STEM Magnet program, students will be highly competitive for admission to rigorous university programs.
Students in the West Florence STEM Magnet will engage in experiences such as:
- Field trips to STEM colleges and universities
- Field trips to businesses, hospitals, corporations, and other entities that are directly related to STEM, such as McLeod Health, Duke Hospital, BMW, Boeing Headquarters, Verizon Plants, Otis Plants, etc.
- Engage with STEM professionals through panels, one-on-one mentoring, and internships/apprenticeships
- Complete job shadowing experiences in fields they desire
- Engage in virtual autopsies using our Anatomage table
- Build gliders, rockets, robots, and more in our engineering courses
- Become familiar with various online programs, coding, and 3D softwares
In addition to hands-on experiences and opportunities, students in the STEM Magnet also complete a four-year electronic portfolio used to showcase their academic performance and experiences in the magnet. Additionally, students will complete an individual four-year capstone project that aims to improve some aspect of our world using STEM.
